Tom was a Canadian soldier that lived in Vancouver. Eager to serve his country and because his dad and brother had joined the battlefield and he wanted to fight by their side, he enlisted in the army when he was 18 with his best friend, Johnny.  After a few years of training, he was sent to Juno Beach, during world war 2 with Johnny on d-day (1944) where the Canadians were fighting, He and Johnny were assigned to the infantry unit where he and other Canadians were fighting on the front lines. During the invasion,  the German offensive was aggressive and threatened to take over his position. Tom's allies were tired and injured, they were also running out of medical supplies. The Germans launched an ultimate attack but Tom came up with a plan, he made a small group and left to create a distraction that took the German troops attention,  before he left, Tom told the others to gather medical supplies and  reinforcements. But Tom suddenly ran into a group of German troops. During the battle, Tom and Johnny fought hard. Suddenly Johnny was shot, but the fight wasn't finished, he and his allies kept fighting . Tom’s arm was unfortunately blown off by a grenade during the fight; Tom was heartbroken and , once Tom had returned to the Canadian bunkers to be treated, he was informed that back up from the other allied countries had arrived, and the German troops were pushed back, because of Tom's injuries, he was sent back home. Although he was awarded an award for his bravery at home, when he returned home, he received a terrible message; his dad and brother had just died in battle. He fell into despair, he became more and more depressed since he wasn’t able to save his best friend and he lost many members of his family. He decided to live alone in the woods because he couldn’t overcome the death of his loved ones and the horrors of war.
